How does a tilt-and-turn window work?

One handle, three positions. Handle down: locked, with the sash clamped against its seal. Handle up: tilt mode, the top of the sash leans into the room for ventilation while the bottom stays on its hinges. Handle horizontal: turn mode, the whole sash swings inward like a door, for cleaning the outside glass or for egress.

Why does it suit Calgary winters and chinooks?

A slider's sash moves past a brush or fin weatherstrip, and repeated cycling wears that seal flat. A tilt-and-turn has no sliding seal. Turning the handle drives GU multi-point hardware that pulls the sash against a continuous EPDM gasket all around the perimeter. After a chinook swing the seal recovers, because it was never asked to slide.

The engineering, chamber by chamber, is on the cross-section anatomy page. Fighting fog on the glass? Read why windows sweat in winter.

Are tilt-and-turn windows safe with children?

With the right hardware, yes. Tilt mode is child-safe by default: the bottom of the sash stays secured. For bedrooms, a restrictor limits the turn-mode opening to about 6 cm, and a key-operated handle keeps a child from unlocking it. Screens mount outside, so the sash never touches them. What warranty comes with it?

25 years on the uPVC frames and sashes for the original owner, 10 years on sealed glass units, 10 years on hardware, and 2 years on installation parts and labour. It transfers to a new owner for 10 years from installation, with proof of purchase. REHAU backs the materials warranty; PWS provides the installation warranty.

Can I finance tilt-and-turn windows?

I found no window grant open to Calgary homeowners right now. Alberta SHARP is open: a low-interest home equity loan up to $40,000 at 4.45%, which covers window replacement, for homeowners 65+ with household income of $75,000 or less and at least 25% equity. Calgary's CEIP is closed until winter 2026/27. Details are on window financing in Calgary.

How does buying work?

It starts with you. Describe the project in four quick steps on the start page. I visit a home only when the homeowner invites me first. At a time you agree to, I come out for a free measurement, and PWS gives you a written quote. Already holding someone else's quote? Run it through the free Window Quote Check first.

Who supplies and installs the windows?

Permanent Windows Solutions supplies and installs them. I'm a specialist there and I earn commission. European Window Guy is my practice at PWS, not a separate manufacturer or installer.
