Window Quote Check: where the surprises hide

A lot of window-buying pain shows up after you sign: a re-measure charge on install day, vague trim, a warranty that covers less than you thought. Hold your quote next to this page and answer 12 questions. You'll get a plain list of what to ask your salesperson, whoever they work for.

1. Does the quote list every opening separately, with size and window type?

2. Does it say the price will not change after the final measurement?

3. Are removal and disposal of the old windows included?

4. Is the interior trim (casing) included, and is the material named?

5. Is the exterior finish included (capping, flashing, sealant)?

6. Does it say how the window is sealed to the wall (foam, tape or membrane)?

7. Is the glass specified: number of panes, Low-E coating, gas fill?

8. Is the frame profile or manufacturer named?

9. Is the warranty broken out: frame, glass, hardware and labour, each with its own length?

10. Are the deposit amount and payment schedule written down?

11. Is there a delivery or install window in writing?

12. Is there a named person to call after installation?
